Record and edit a competent 5-minute extract from the planned talk and music radio programme by:

a) setting up appropriate equipment

I used a numarc mixing desk. It is use with the mixxx software and can be used with music sound effects and jingles. The DJ can easily mix and edit sound clips on the macbook software. The mac also has multiple headphones jacks which allow everyone in the group to listen to the show, However the headphone jack on the mixing desk allows the mixer to hear sounds before being queued in. (mac above) (Mixing desk below)

The microphone is connected to the macbook and controlled using the mixxx software. I used The pop filter on the audio to keep it crisp and clear, it also doesn't pick up background noise meaning just the talker can be heard. We put the microphone on the desk with lots of room around it so that the three people talking into it could be heard. All of the cables were kept tidy and out of the way so that no one would trip or pull on a cable accidentally and brake the equipment. The Mac and the Mixing desk were next to each other so that the DJ is close to both pieces of equipment.
the mixxx timeline features my jingles, voxpops, songs and interviews. we used a hard-drive to convert the files onto the mac. for a track to be played  you have to click and hold on one of the decks.

b) following running order and content plan
We followed the order as recording the show and had it in front of us when recording our live show. We kept to the order however did not finish at the 10 minute mark due to some segments of the show not taking as long as we had planned. We included everything from the running order in the final cut of the radio show however some features did not last very long. In the final edit of the show we only featured 5 seconds of the song at the end however we intended it to last 15 seconds. We featured the intended guest from the jesus green 10k run. However we only got half of the amount of vox pops that we intended on having. The style of our show maintained the same and we kept the same topics that we intended on having in the show. we changed some topics in the news due to the fact that when we wrote the script the news articles were irrelevant. Some of our phone call interview had to be cut due to long pauses which would sound awkward on the radio show or had irrelevant content which would not have fitted with the show. Parts were also removed to help with the complete timing of the show.

c) following safe working practices

Offices are generally low risk workplaces, however BBC activities within office areas are sometimes not 'typical' for an office environment, eg filming/ recording. This guide provides general advice for working in both BBC offices and third party (non BBC) offices.
As the host, BBC staff have a responsibility for the safety of their guests, ensuring those visiting are fully aware of emergency arrangements.

What Can Go Wrong?

  • Slips and trips from poor housekeeping and temporary equipment when filming/ recording
  • Aches and pains in upper limbs, from poor working posture.
  • Electric shock from poorly maintained/damaged electrical sockets/equipment
  • Fire, due to close proximity of hot equipment to flammable furnishings
  • Burns from contact with hot equipment.
  • Lack of knowledge of buildings, its layout and emergency arrangements/ procedures

Legal/BBC Requirements

  • There are no specific legal requirements to draw to your attention; you must still apply the control measures that are relevant to your activity.

I followed the BBC's safety guidelines for a safe working environment when we were recording our radio show. We made sure we kept all the cables away from potential trip hazard areas, for example sticking out of desks or on the floor. All bags, chairs and other equipment was tucked away and put out of reach and away from causing a problem, I.E bag falling on desk. We also did not have any liquids around the equipment, this was incase any spillages which might have occurred and resulted in the equipment braking. We made sure we had correct posture when performing the radio show and made sure that our seats were adjusted so that we could work for long periods of time and not have back injuries or become uncomfortable.

d) following production processes

As the presenter I was the face of the show and I made sure that I brought excitement and energy to the show. I made sure that I followed the script and covered all of the topics which were on the schedule however, at some points I went off script to add more to topics which were on the script. I also interacted with the news presenter on the show and had a conversation which makes the show sound more human and not just static and robotic. This in general helped the show sound a lot better and more inviting to listeners as they would not want to hear a boring bland presenter for a breakfast show as it could make them more likely to stop listening or have a bad day due to a bad morning.

In the pre production stage I was responsible for creating the Jingles for the show. I recorded other people in the team and found sound effects online to go into the them. I then placed the recorded clips into an audition file and added a backing track, record scratches and effects to create the jingles. The jingles are catchy and draw attention to listeners by having funny catchphrases and effects. I was also responsible for creating the script and making it sound like how I would naturally talk. This made the show flow more and feel more informal and as if i was talking directly to the audience.
